Exam technique is not a collection of tricks that replaces knowledge. It is the ability to recognise what a question requires and make your knowledge visible to the examiner efficiently. Good technique develops through subject-specific practice and accurate feedback.
Read the whole question demand
Underline or mentally identify the command word, topic, context, and limits. A student may know a great deal about a topic but lose marks by answering a broader question than the one set.
Command words have subject-specific meanings. “Describe” usually focuses on what happens or what is shown; “explain” requires linked reasoning; “compare” needs relevant similarities and differences; “evaluate” requires a supported judgement. Use your exam board's published guidance and mark schemes rather than assuming every subject uses identical rules.
For extended questions, spend a short moment deciding the answer's direction. A clear plan prevents the first available fact from controlling the whole response.
Use the mark allocation and time deliberately
The number of marks signals the likely depth or number of credited points, though the exact relationship varies by question. A one-mark item should not receive five minutes. An extended response needs enough development to access higher levels.
Calculate a rough time per mark for each paper, allowing time to check. Practise this before the real exam. If a question is taking far too long, record useful working, move on according to the paper's format, and return if possible.
Build responses that are easy to credit
Short explanations
Link cause to consequence explicitly. Avoid relying on “therefore” to hide a missing step. If a scientific explanation moves from condition to process to outcome, make all three visible.
Evidence-based responses
Select evidence that directly supports the point and explain its relevance. Quotation or data without analysis may not answer the question. Analysis without precise evidence may remain too general.
Extended answers
Plan a small number of developed points rather than listing everything remembered. Maintain focus on the wording, connect paragraphs, and make the final judgement consistent with the reasoning.
Show method and use precise conventions
In mathematics and science, visible working can earn method marks and makes errors easier to find. Write the equation or approach, substitute values with units, calculate carefully, and give the answer in the requested form. Check significant figures, units, direction, and reasonableness.
For diagrams and graphs, follow subject conventions: labels, scales, units, lines of best fit, and appropriate precision. Small presentational decisions can carry marks because they communicate scientific or mathematical meaning.
Attempt under a clear condition
Decide whether the task is guided, closed-book, timed, or full exam practice before beginning.
Mark against the right source
Use the relevant specification and mark scheme, noting acceptable alternatives and level descriptors.
Classify lost marks
Separate missing knowledge from interpretation, method, communication, and timing.
Reattempt the weak skill
Use a similar question so the correction must transfer beyond the original wording.
Diagnose repeated mark-loss patterns
One paper provides examples; several papers reveal patterns. Keep a short record of recurring issues such as incomplete comparisons, missing units, vague evidence, unbalanced evaluations, or questions left unfinished.
Turn each pattern into a practice target. “Improve exam technique” is too broad. “Write three six-mark science explanations with complete cause-and-effect chains” is actionable. Use our past-paper method to connect marking with targeted revision.
